Subah-e-Banaras at Assi Ghat: Morning Boat Rides, Yoga & Sunrise Rituals

Subah-e-Banaras: The Awakening of Kashi

There is an ancient saying in India: “Subah-e-Banaras, Shaam-e-Awadh, Shab-e-Malwa”—celebrating the divine morning of Varanasi as one of the three most beautiful experiences in Hindustan. Unlike the grandeur of the evening aarti at Dashashwamedh, the morning ritual at Assi Ghat—known as Subah-e-Banaras—is an ethereal, meditative communion of Vedic resonance, classical music, and spiritual serenity.

Dawn Schedule at Assi Ghat

The program starts before first light (around 5:00 AM in summer and 5:45 AM in winter):

  1. Prabhati Ganga Aarti: Young priests offer incense, fire, and sacred water to welcome Surya Dev and Goddess Ganga.
  2. Vedic Chanting: Chanting of ancient hymns from the Rigveda and Yajurveda by Gurukul students.
  3. Classical Ragas: Live performances of classical vocal, sitar, or flute resonant with morning ragas like Bhairav and Todi.
  4. Community Yoga: A rejuvenating 45-minute open-air yoga and pranayama session conducted right on the ghat steps overlooking the misty Ganges.

Sunrise Boat Ride: Assi to Manikarnika

Immediately following the morning Aarti, embarking on a sunrise boat ride from Assi Ghat down towards Manikarnika and Dashashwamedh Ghat is an absolute must. As the morning sun casts its golden rays across the majestic 84 ghats, you witness the eternal rhythm of Varanasi—pilgrims taking the holy snan, sadhus in deep meditation, and temple bells welcoming a new dawn.
