Manikarnika & Harishchandra Ghat: Understanding Kashi’s Sacred Cremation Ghats

Where Death Meets Liberation: The Philosophy of Moksha in Kashi

In most parts of the world, death is viewed with dread and sorrow. In Kashi, death is celebrated as Mahasmashana—the great cremation ground where the soul achieves Moksha (freedom from the endless cycle of rebirth). Manikarnika and Harishchandra are the two sacred burning ghats where funeral pyres have burned without interruption for thousands of years.

Manikarnika Ghat: The Gem of Eternity

Legend recounts that while Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were bathing here, a precious earring (Manikarnika) fell into the sacred well. Lord Shiva declared that anyone who breathes their last in Kashi and is consigned to the holy fire here receives the Taraka Mantra directly from Him, granting instantaneous salvation.

Harishchandra Ghat: The Path of Truth

Named after the legendary King Harishchandra who sacrificed his kingdom, wealth, and family to uphold truth and righteousness while working as a cremation keeper on this very ghat. Today, Harishchandra Ghat features both traditional pyres and modern eco-friendly electric crematoriums.

Respectful Visitor Etiquette & Photography Rules

  • Strictly No Photography: Taking photos or videos of the cremation pyres and grieving families is considered deeply disrespectful and is strictly forbidden.
  • Maintain Silence: Speak in hushed tones, dress modestly, and maintain a quiet, reflective demeanor when walking near the ghat.
  • Beware of Touts: Ignore touts offering "viewing terrace tours" or asking for "wood donations" for the poor; these are unauthorized commercial solicitations.
